4. Let the number be x.

3x + 7 = 37
3x = 37 – 7= 30
x = 30/3 = 10

5. Let Manu’s age be x.

Then Manu’s fathers age = 3x +4 = 37(given)
3x = 37 – 4 = 33
x = 33/3 = 11

6. a) x – 7 = 17

When x = 10, LHS = 10 – 7 = 3, which is not equal to RHS.
Therefore, x = 10 is not a solution of the given equation.
b) y + 8 = 10
When y =2, LHS = 2 + 8 = 10, which is equal to RHS.
Therefore, y = 2 is a solution of the given equation.

7. 3y + 15 = 45

3y = 45 – 15 = 30
y = 30 /3 = 10

8. a) 3m = 9

m = 9/3 = 3
b) 2(m+2) = 18
m+2 = 18/2 = 9
m = 9 -2 = 7

9. a)y-2 = 0

Add 2 to both sides; y -2+2 = 0+2
y = 2
b) y + 2 =0
Subtract 2 from both sides; y + 2 -2 = 0-2
y = -2
