Fill in the blanks:

  1. The solution of the equation 2x – 1 = 3 is ————–
  2. The solution of 2y = 14 is ————
  3. A linear equation in one variable has ———– solution.
  4. 5 is added to thrice a number x gives 20. The value of x is ——————-
  5. If 2 is subtracted from a number, it becomes -8.This statement in the form of an equation is ————–
    Answer the following:
  6. Find the solution of the equation: 2x + 5 = 25
  7. The perimeter of a rectangle is 12 cm and its width is 2 m, find its length?
  8. Solve the equation 2x + 5 = x – 3
  9. Three consecutive integers add up to 45. Find the integers?
  10. The difference between two whole numbers is 24. The ratio of the two numbers is 5:1. Find the two numbers?

ANSWERS:

  1. 2
  2. 7
  3. Only one solution
  4. 5
  5. x – 2 = -8
  6. 2x + 5 = 25
    2x = 25 – 5 = 20
    x = 20/2 = 10.
  7. Assume the length of the rectangle to be x cm
    The perimeter of the rectangle = 2 x (length + breadth)
    12 = 2 (x + 2)
    12 = 2x + 4
    12 – 4 = 2x
    8 = 2x
    x = 8/2 = 4 cm
  8. 2x + 5 = x – 3
    2x – x = (-3) + (-5)
    x = -8
  9. Let the three consecutive integers be x, x+1, x+2.
    Given x + (x +1) + (x + 2) = 45
    3x + 3 = 45
    3x = 45 – 3 = 42
    x = 42/3 = 14
    x + 1 = 14 + 1 = 15
    x + 2 = 14 + 2 = 16
    So the three consecutive integers are 14, 15, 16.
  10. Let the two numbers be 5x and x.
    Given 5x – x = 24
    4x = 24
    x = 24/4 = 6
