Data Handling – Chapter 3/Extra Questions for Practice
Answer the following:

  1. Find the range of the following data: 96, 38, 47, 32, 48, 23, 27 and 28?
  2. Find the mode of the following data: 11, 13, 15, 11, 14, 12, 11, 18, 11 and 19?
  3. Find the AM of 20, 25, 40, 30 and 35?
  4. Find the median of the data: 18, 12, 15, 25 and 20?
  5. When a dice is thrown, find the probability of getting an even number?
  6. Find the mean of first ten prime numbers?
  7. A bag contains 8 red balls and 4 blue balls. One ball is drawn at random from the bag. Find the probability of getting:
    a) red ball
    b) blue ball
  8. Find x if the mean of the following numbers is 30.
    28, 25, x, 29, 22
  9. Find the mean of first 5 multiples of 5?
  10. Find the median of first 7 prime numbers?

SOLUTION:

  1. Greatest number: 96
    Smallest number: 23
    Range = 96 – 23 = 73
  2. Mode is 11 because it occurs more frequently.
  3. Arithmetic Mean = Sum of all observations/ Number of observations
    = (20 + 25 + 40 + 30 + 35)/5
    = 150/5 = 30
  4. Arrange the given data in ascending order:
    12, 15, 18, 20, 25
    Median = 18
  5. Numbers on a die are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
    Even numbers are 2, 4, 6
    P (getting an even number) = 3/6 = ½
  6. First 10 prime numbers are 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23 and 29.
    Mean = (2+3+5+7+11+13+17+19+23+27)/10
    = 129/10 = 12.9
  7. Total number of balls = 8 + 4 = 12
    Number of red balls = 8
    P (getting a red ball) = 8/12 = 2/3
    Number of blue balls = 4
    P (getting a blue ball) = 4/12 = 1/3
  8. Given mean = 30
    (28 + 25 + x + 29 + 22)/5 = 30
    104 + x = 150
    x = 150 – 104 = 46
  9. First 5 multiples of 5 are 5, 10, 15, 20, 25
    Mean = (5 + 10 + 15 + 20 + 25)/5 = 75/5 = 15
  10. First 7 prime numbers are 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17.
    Median = 7
