Fill in the blanks:

1. An expression with only one term is called a —————–

2. An expression which contains two unlike terms is called a ————–

3. An expression which contains three terms is called a ————

4. Any expression with one or more terms is called a ———–

5. The numerical coefficient of 6xyz is ———-

Answer the following:

6. Form algebraic expressions for the following:

a) 5 is added to the product of x and y.
b) 3 subtracted from the sum of x and y.

7. Evaluate the following expressions when p = 2 and q = 3

a) 3p – 2q
b) 4p + 2q

8. Add the following:

a) 3ab, 2b, 4ba, 3a, 5a, b
b) x + 12 and 7x – 8

9. Subtract- 3xy from 4xy.

10. Classify the following as monomials, binomials, trinomials and polynomials:

a) 3ab, 4x + 2y, x y, 3a + 4b + 5c, 6ab + 3a + 4c, pqr, 2u + 3v

Answers:

1. Monomial

2. Binomial

3. Trinomial

4. Polynomial

5.6

6. a) x y + 5
b) (x+ y) -3

7. a) 3p – 2q

Substitute the value of p=2 and q=3
3 x 2 – 2 x 3 = 6 – 6 = 0

b) 4p + 2q
Substitute the value of p=2 and q =3
4 x 2 + 2 x 3 = 8 + 6 = 14

8. a) 3ab + 2b + 4ba+ 3a+ 5a + b

Collect the like terms together, we get
3ab + 4ba + 3a + 5a + 2b + b = 7ab + 8a+ 3b
b) x + 12 + 7x -8 = x + 7x + 12 – 8 = 8x + 4

9. 4xy – (-3xy) = 4xy + 3xy = 7xy.

10. 3ab – Monomial

4x + 2y – Binomial
xy – Monomial
3a + 4b + 5c – Trinomial
6ab + 3a + 4c – Trinomial
pqr – Monomial
2u + 3v – Binomial
